REVIEWS - The New Raj Nagar Phone: (416) 926-0953 The New Raj Nagar is situated downtown on Toronto's busiest street, below a rowdy English pub favoured by expats. The decor is minimal, it's too large for the numbers they serve and there's nothing spectacular about the ambience. There isn't anything on the menu that you can't find at a hundred other Indian restaurants. So why do we like it so much? The servers are always extremely friendly and helpful. The tamarind chutney is undoubtedly the best we've ever eaten (it's rich, salty and sweet and I want to order a pint of it every time we eat there!). The vegetable pakhoras (vegetables battered in a chickpea flour and spice mixture and then deep-fried) are crispy and rich. The onion bhajis are equally scrumptious. Both are served with the aforementioned chutney and have oftentimes served as our entire meal when we just kept ordering them, without moving onto the main meal.. The channa masala (chickpeas in a spicy tomato sauce) are quite good, and the other "regulars" such as: potatoes and peas, fried mushrooms, lentil dahl served with Basmati rice etc. are quite respectable. The prices are very reasonable, and they serve Kingfisher beer from India although not Lal Toofan which is another favourite. Some Indian restaurants serve their food absolutely drowning in oils, but Raj Nagar does a good job of blending the richness of the cuisine with a reasonable amount of oil for the purpose. Tasty, cheap, good service, great chutney. Our kind of place. groovegan rating: **** © 1999-2004 KL Projects |
